Starting the Repair Process:

Inventory queue: Timepieces are carefully logged into the inventory and are then processed, based upon the order in which the timepiece was received.

Availability of parts: Repairs often require replacement parts if the original parts are worn out, missing or have mechanically failed. These are ordered through trusted vendors and may not always be in stock or might require special ordering.

Complexity of the repair: Some of the repairs are simple fixes, but many involve a complete overhaul service (disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, oiling and regulating) or detailed analyses of the issues potentially affecting the operation of the timepiece. Occasionally, a timepiece presents unique challenges that take extended time and focus to successfully repair.

Testing of the timepieces: It is a matter of pride to make every effort to return the timepiece in good running order; therefore, timepieces are not repaired in the fastest, easiest way. Part of the process involves testing the repaired clock or watch for a few weeks after it is reassembled to ensure that it keeps proper time. Some clocks require additional testing to ensure the clock correctly strikes the hour/half/quarter hours or accurately plays the chimes. Clocks with moon dials or calendar functions are also checked for proper operation.

Success of the repair: The goal of any repair is to get the clock operational such that it will not need to be returned to Wyndwood Tyme until it is time to be serviced again — usually in 5 to 7 years.

  • Repairs are guaranteed, based on the timepiece and the extent of repairs
    • Normally, the guarantee is 2 years on clocks and 1 year on watches
  • The history of the timepiece is provided to customers when available
  • Care & Adjustment instructions are provided
  • Estimates are available in advance
  • Additional repairs may be required after closer inspection
  • Customers will be advised of findings.
About John Riabov, Horologist

John Riabov, is a graduate of, and certified by, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) School of Horology in Columbia, PA. The School provides an intensive, hands-on training in the repair and restoration of fine clocks and watches. After completing more than 2040 hours of instruction and 53 weeks of training over an 18-month period, John logged in 420 hours of additional bench time.

John’s extensive knowledge and mastery of both clock and watch repair led him to the top of his graduating class. The curriculum was presented in two separate phases; the first program focused on clocks (see Clock Program curriculum listed below), followed by the study of watches (see Watch Program curriculum listed below).

During his tenure at the School, he was selected to serve as an apprentice under the guidance of highly trained and qualified instructors.

John’s patient nature, innate mechanical abilities and thorough attention to detail lend themselves naturally to the fine craftsmanship required to restore treasured timepieces.

As an active member of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI), he abides by the organization’s code of ethics.

John’s relationship with other colleagues in the field has created a network of resources at his disposal to ensure the complete restoration or repair of heirloom watches or clocks. For example, he has access to craftsmen talented in fine cabinet making, metal refinishing, or dial painting.
